Water and Sanitation
Approximately 60 million people in Bangladesh currently live in urban areas and this number is rising very fast. Climate change events like rising surface water level, flooding, land erosion, and droughts are driving more people to towns and cities every year, putting extra strain on already expanded water and sanitation resources. 19 million people live in the capital city, Dhaka, and 40% of these live in informal and often illegal settlements.
At the same time, the population live in the rural areas are also deprived of pure drinking water and proper sanitation system. These heavily-packed communities have lesser number of proper toilets; human waste mix with running water and raw sewage drains directly goes into rivers. Nearly half the population in urban areas and more than half of the rural areas have no access to improved sanitation facilities, impacting their health, safety, dignity and economic opportunities.
