Akhi Akter is never an outspoken woman originating from an impoverished family. There are four members in her family which include her husband, son, and her elderly father. They came to Dhaka from Noakhali district roughly eight years back in search of work as there were very few opportunities to work which pushed them to leave their conventional place. After arriving in Dhaka, her husband started to work as a day laborer. But most of the days he remained workless. Consequently, they starved a lot and badly suffered due to a lack of nutritious food. Akhi’s disheartened life ended when she met one of the representatives of SAWAB at her village Khaguria under the Vakurta union of Savar Upazila under the Dhaka district. She came to learn about the poverty alleviation project of SAWAB under the banner of the Zakat Fund (Livelihood) Project which is funded by Zakat givers. The overarching approach of this Poverty Alleviation Project received her attention and she showed her eagerness to be a member of this initiative. She took part in motivational sessions and also shared her thoughts. Later she decided to have goats for her livelihood as she had the experience of rearing goats. Akhi was enthusiastic and delighted enough while talking about the opportunity she obtained through this Poverty Alleviation Project and expressed her feelings of happiness as
“Thanks to Almighty Allah. I am extremely happy receiving goats as it has started to pay off. I can earn now by selling kids and bucks and also can save some of it for my children for their future. I will send my children to school. I pray for Islamic Aid and SAWAB as they have helped us during the most disadvantageous time of our lives and made us smile again!’
