Rohingya Crisis

Recently, the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (Rohingya) have faced meticulous intolerance, statelessness and targeted violence in Rakhine State of Myanmar. Such repression has forced Rohingya Muslims to move to Bangladesh for shelter and safety. It started way back to 1978 for the first time, 1991 in a larger number and in 2016 till date as the largest influx. It was August 2017 that triggered by far the largest and fastest refugee influx into Bangladesh. Since then, an estimated 1.6 million Rohingya, including more than 400,000 children, have fled from Rakhine, Myanmar to Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh

This influx caused serious problems in the local host community at Cox’s Bazaar like, significant price hike of fundamentals, scarcity of transports, traffic congestion, degradation of environment, deforestation, destructions of hillocks, manifold increase in house rent, hijacking, robbery, trafficking of illegal drugs, and others heinous activities. We earnestly request to donate to assist these refugees to survive till they will be taken back by Myanmar government.

Education

Education is crucial for everyone, let alone the Rohingya children. The majority of Rohingya children did not have regular access to education. Thus, they are in need of elementary or basic level education.

There is a vital need to provide opportunities for adolescents as only 7 percent of 15 to 18 years old are accessing education. Majority of school-aged Rohingya children (4 to 18 years old) do not have access to basic education.

Education means a hope for the future. In this context, SAWAB operates non-formal education schools for educating the underprivileged Rohingya children to raise literacy and awareness rate among the Rohingya Refugee children in Cox’s Bazaar. Such schools are functioning, with a view to implementing need-based, income-generating and hands-on non-formal education for them.

Food and Non-food Project

In this project, SAWAB will ensure that the most vulnerable population affected in Bangladesh by natural disaster with specific needs have timely access to emergency food and non-food items. SAWAB’s plan is to distribute food and non-food items to reduce the suffering and fulfill the basic needs of Rohingya refugees and distressed people in Bangladesh.

Housing and Shelter

Currently over 1.5 million stateless Rohingya refugees moved to Ukhiya and Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazaar. The vast majority live in 36 extremely congested camps, including the largest single site, the Kutupalong-Balukhali Expansion Site, which hosts to approximately 626,500 Rohingya refugees.

There is not only a lack of shelter but existing shelter is of poor quality, overcrowded, offering little or no privacy and for the most vulnerable adding to a feeling of insecurity and vulnerability. Further problems are expected during regular monsoon (till September) and cold wave (till February) season which will lead to many of the existing shelters being destructed because of their poor built. SAWAB is trying to contribute to address the issue with its limited resources, but more generous donation is required to build a respectable and durable shelter for these refugees.

Health and medical support

Rohingya refuges live a distressful and unsettled life at Cox’s Bazar. They get the daily food support from various sources, but health services to all is inadequate. There is a recurring epidemic threat due to weather condition –scorching heat in summer and biting cold waves in winter. Access to clean water and sanitation facilities is also limited, it increases the risk of water and mosquito borne diseases. Moreover, huge number of females are pregnant and waiting for child-birth without proper heath care services. Conditions on the ground are unhygienic and highly volatile. The spread of infections is facilitated by overcrowding in the camps and settlements.

Almost 52 % of the Rohingya refugees are female; among the females 24,750 are identified as pregnant as per the report by RRRC on Aug 01, 2019. Nevertheless, Emergency obstetric care facilities are required for these pregnant women. They are suffering from different types of diseases like malnutrition, skin diseases, respiratory, seriously burned and injured and so on. Further, patients, mostly children, were coming in with severe diarrhea, fungal skin infections, ear infections and high fever.

In these circumstances, we should provide free medical service, installing medical camps, clinic and free medicine distribution and free ambulance service for them so that they can get enough health and nutrition facilities. It needs to support them until the unhygienic conditions are ended.

WASH project

Clean, accessible water and adequate sanitation for everyone is important for better livelihood. Despite of sufficient fresh water, millions of people lose their life from disease associated with inadequate water supply and poor status of sanitation and hygiene, children to be mostly affected. SAWAB works for water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) to improv the life of Rohingya community with access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation, and hygiene practices.

Please donate to allow Rohingya people to have access to safe water, sanitation and hygienic life.

Orphan support

Rohingya refugees are already vulnerable people and orphans among them are in the worst situation in the world. SAWAB has taken an initiative to address these orphans for assuring a better life for them. They are provided with food, clothes, basic and moral education so that they will never feel unwanted and as a burden in the society. SAWAB stands beside these orphan children and needs donation from the philanthropic organizations and persons to upgrade their lives.

Skill development

Rohingya youths need to be involved in income generating activities until they are taken back by the Myanmar Government. So to make them skilled in different sectors SAWAB provides skill development training to Rohingya youths.

Your donation can assist these Rohingya youths to be self-reliant through participating in the skill development programs and contribute their family.

Sewing Training and Machine distribution

Among the total 1.6 million Rohingya refugees above 50% are female. Many among them are mothers, widows, and many others are with family, but none of them are in a position to earn and support the family. They are mentally depleted and socially burdens. SAWAB wants to go on massively with its activities by enhancing skill development training for such women by providing them with sewing machine training and with sewing machines so that these women will be able to lead their lives with dignity, freedom and self-esteem. In this context, adequate fund is required from donor organizations throughout the world.

In-kind gifts distribution

Please donate in-kind gifts and see the smile in the faces of Rohingya refugees.

Donors from round the world feel empathy for the Rohingya refugees and donate in cash to implement various projects as well as in-kind. In-Kind gifts which include clothes for family use, dresses for men, women and children, kitchen utensils, toys for children, and other items of convenience. Your in-kind Gifts meet their immediate need. SAWAB is happy to distribute all in-kind gifts to the vulnerable Rohingya community.
