Poverty Alleviation
Poverty in Bangladesh is declining since the early 2000s as it shows the accelerated economic growth in few years. According to the World Bank, Bangladesh’s poverty rate fell from 82% in 1972, to 18.5% in 2010, to 13.8% in 2016, and below 9% in 2018, as measured by the percentage of people living below the extreme poverty line. To eliminate poverty completely we still need to work hard and create opportunities for the poorest people to be involved in some sorts of income generation activities.
SAWAB has different initiatives to alleviate poverty: through livelihood projects and through micro-finance. SAWAB started its micro-investment program by giving loans without interest for small business like grocery, goat rearing, poultry, fruits and vegetable selling, rickshaw/ van pulling and tea selling, etc. Thus a good level of socio-economic impact has been seen in the community. At the same time, SAWAB began livelihood program by providing cows, fish cultivation, Vegetable gardening, goods for grocery shop and rickshaws/vans among the vulnerable group and allows about two years for making their lives easier and being self-reliant through income generating activities.
